Is it normal for old scars to hurt?

I have a fair amount of four-year-old large hypertrophic scars (at least, I think they're hypertrophic--they're raised, and used to be red, but have faded to white over time) on the inside of my upper arm. Up until a year ago they never bothered me, but now they'll start throbbing sometimes, and are sensitive to fabric rubbing up against them. Should I go and get them checked out, or is this normal? Is it normal for old scars to hurt?
They shouldn't really be hurting, unless you did some sort of permanent damage to the area. If they're old then there's no harm in showing a doctor the next time you're there.
